OPTIMOVER INFO & USE
Find out why the Optimover is such a great choice for moving your caravan, boat or trailer - even in tight spaces.
What makes Optimover more capable than other motorised caravan movers?
Optimover uses a planetary gearing system and high amperage draw with a quality motor. This combination, unique to Optitec, allows Optimover to achieve incredible power from a compact and low-weight machine.
The quality materials and parts used in the Optimover means this machine continues to operate to an exceptional standard after many years in use.
What trailer weight can Optimover manoeuvre?
The Optimover moves trailers, boats and vans between 500kg to 3500kg and a towball weight of up to 350kg.
What trailer tyres can Optimover manoeuvre?
Optimover moves both single and dual axle trailers and is capable of turning vans on their axis to facilitate tight turns within confined spaces.
For dual axle vans with full off-road tyres, the Optimover will move your van with ease, but expect to see a slightly wider turning circle than is possible with other tyres.
Does Optimover work on inclines?
The Optimover is designed to be durable across a wide variety of settings including moderate inclines.
As a guide, it will move a 2.5 Tonne trailer on a 10% or 6 degree gradient (1m rise for every 10m) on concrete. However, the weight distribution of your trailer and the surface of the incline (concrete, grass, gravel) will influence performance on inclines.
Customers are welcome to seek our advice if intending to use Optimover on inclines. We may recommend our try before you buy option to test the Optimover in your setting before purchasing.
Does Optimover work on all surfaces?
The solid rubber tyre of the Optimover is effective across various surfaces. The optimover is most effective on concrete, aggregate or pavers but will also work on grass or compact gravel that is dry and firm. See our Videos for examples of the Optimover operating on grass and gravel.
A bit of creativity using 4WD recovery tracks, rubber mats or timber planks may assist the Optimover where the surface is not sufficiently firm.
Customers are welcome to seek our advice if intending to use Optimover on softer surfaces, including grass and gravel. We may recommend our try before you buy option to test the Optimover in your setting before purchasing.
Does Optimover have a built in braking system?
The Optimover is fitted with a dynamic brake. When you release the forward or reverse button, the Optimover automatically engages the dynamic brake to lock the Optiover (and your trailer) in position. The wheel will never free-wheel away from you.
The Optimover is not connected to your caravan or trailer braking system. Whilst dependent on the size of your trailer, it is generally not recommended to use Optimover on gradients above 10%.
Optimover Set Up
Below is information on installing your Optimover with your Optitec clamp, powering up.
Optimover Operating Manual
- Optimover Manual – Purchased after April 2024 (current manual)
- Optimover Manual – Purchased before April 2024 (old manual)
How is Optimover attached to the trailer?
The Optimover is mounted to your trailer like a traditional jockey wheel via a clamp attachment. No professional installation is required, and the Optimover can be attached or removed in under five minutes.
What height and size drawbar does Optimover attach to?
The Optimover can be fitted to any trailer drawbar using a jockey wheel clamp. Optitec sells a wide variety of clamps to fit many different size drawbars, including gooseneck style drawbars.
See our clamp size guide to find the most suitable clamp for your trailer.
To connect your Optimover, your drawbar will need to be raised or lowered to be between 420mm and 650mm from the ground.
When operatng the Optimover, your drawbar should be able to be raised or lowered between 420mm and 520mm height from ground to allow for effective operation.
Do I need a double clamp attachment?
Trailers over 1500kg require a heavy-duty double clamp to ensure the Optimover is secured with no movement in the pole when operating. Optitec clamps are purpose built for this need.
See our clamp size guide to find the most suitable clamp for your trailer.

Powering your Optimover
Optimover needs to be powered by a 12V Battery. The absence of an internal battery keeps the Optimover lighter, smaller and more durable over time.
Using the connector leads supplied with the Optimover, you can either:
1. Connect Optimover to your caravan battery (provided it is wired to draw power out) via an anderson plug.
2. Connect Optimover directly to a 12V Battery. We recommend at least 80AH.
3. Connect Optimover to a 12V jump starter / portable battery pack. Though there are many compatable options, the team at Optitec use and recommend the Repco 1700A AGM Sealed Battery Pack
If you need to use a connector lead longer than 2m, ensure you use at least 6 B&S cable.
OPTIMOVER CARE
How to maintain your Optimover for optimal performance. We recommend you store your caravan mover in the custom designed wheelie bag.

Troubleshooting
We’re sorry to hear you have encountered an issue. Rest assured, issues that can arise from time to time are easy to solve.
Please see our trouble shooting tips below or email mike@optitec.co.nz for assistance.
I do not hear a beep when I connect Optimover to power
This is a sign that the machine is not receiving power and we need to review the power source being used.
Using power from your caravan
If you are connecting your Optimover to your caravan’s batteries via an Anderson Plug for the first time and not receiving power, it may be that your Anderson Plug is not fitted to supply two-way power. That is, power can be received by this plug but not released. You will need an electrician or caravan service provider to re-wire your plug for two-way power.
If you are connecting your Optimover to your caravan’s batteries via an Anderson Plug that you have successfully drawn power from before; it may be that your batteries are not sufficiently charged or you may have blown a fuse. The Optimover will draw up to 70Amps and we recommend a fuse line of 80 Amps or more on your van.
Using power from a battery pack or jump starter kit
The Optimover is compatible with many battery packs or car jump starter kids. Please ensure it is 12V and at least 80AH. The team at Optitec use and recommend the Repco 1700A AGM Sealed Battery Pack
Check your connector leads
Long cables or connector leads (over 2m) can be less effective at transferring power from the battery in use to your Optimover. Please attempt to use a shorter lead to identify if there is a power transfer issue.
If you have have reviewed all of the above and are still not obtaining the first beep, and:
- you are using a a white remote control please email mike@optitec.co.nz
- you are using an older black remote control, we recommend ordering a new receiver kit here.
I hear the first beep when I connect Optimover to power, but not a second beep when I turn on the remote control
If you do not hear a second beep when turning on the remote control there may be a power issue within the remote control or a problem with the connection between the remote control and the receiver in your Optimover.
Try placing a new 9V Battery into the remote control. Note, even if the red light appears when you are pressing the on button there may still be insufficient charge in the battery to turn on the OptiMover.
If you are still not obtaining the second beep from your Optimover after reviewing the battery power in the remote, and:
- you are using a a white remote control please email mike@optitec.co.nz
- you are using an older black remote control, we recommend ordering a new receiver kit here.
I hear both beeps and my Optimover will turn left and right but not move in the forward and backward direction
There may be two causes to this problem.
a) The machine is only getting a small amount of power and not enough to fully operate the machine at its capacity. To ascertain if there is an issue with the power source, try connecting directly to a battery pack or jump starter kit that is at least 80ah and use a short connector leads (1-2m). Or if running a cable more than 2m, ensure to use at least 6 B&S cable.
b) If power and connector leads are reviewed and not a problem, then there may be a fault or deterioration in the relay of the receiver within your Optimover. If:
- you are using a a white remote control, you can order a new receiver here or if your Optimover is under warranty please email mike@optitec.co.nz
- you are using an older black remote control, we recommend ordering a new receiver kit here.
My Optimover is not turning left or right
We suggest first reviewing the position of your OptiMover’s pole. Make sure the pole is wound down near the bottom and below the vertical key that facilitates the turning mechanism. The machine will not turn if it is wound above this key.
Next review if the wiring on the turning motor may have come loose. Remove your outer cover to view this.
Lastly check whether the housing is broken on the turning gearbox (generally only an issue for OptiMovers over five years old). There are two ways to check for this, first you can try and turn the pole with your hand, if the pole turns freely but the wheel doesn’t then the gearbox is broken. You can also check this by removing the cover and checking for any cracks or broken pieces on the turning gearbox.
If there has been a break or fault in the turning gearbox you can order a new one here or email us if your Optimover is within warranty.
When holding down the directional button, the Optimover will start and then stop – jolting movement.
Using a white remote control?
This is likely caused by low battery in the remote control. Please put a brand new battery inside the remote control and if the issue persists, please contact us.
Using a black remote control?
This intermittent start / stop is likely being caused by a breakdown in the signal between your remote control and receiver within the OptiMover. Optitec has upgraded the OptiMover receivers to address this concern. We recommend ordering a new remote control and receiver here.
The Optimover is moving in a different direction to the button being pressed on the older black remote control.
Firstly, please make sure that you are only pressing one button at a time.
If this still occurs, it is a sign that the contacts in your older black remote control have deteriorated over time. Optitec has introduced an upgraded remote control to address this concern. You will also need to upgrade the receiver in the Optimover.
We recommend ordering a new remote control and receiver here.
My Optimover beeps and turns itself off
The machine has built in overload, undervoltage and over temperature protection.
Overload
This occurs is the machine is trying to do more than it is capable of doing, the van weight /incline/ surface combination is too much for the machine, it will turn itself off.
Undervoltage
This occurs if the machine is not getting enough power to operate, this can be caused by using a battery that is not allowing enough output/ large enough or the cable is too long & thin and you are experiencing voltage drop.
Overtemperature protection
On some very hot days with long operation, this may kick in, please allow the machine to cool and then restart.
If the problem is persistent or you believe it is occurring under normal operating conditions, please contact us.
I accidently connected the alligator clip cables to the incorrect terminals (reverse polarised)
Unfortunately the control board in your Optimover will need replacing. Please order a new remote and receiver here.
